FORT WORTH, Texas -- By running up front seemingly every weekend, Carl Edwards and Kyle Busch are getting all the attention. And most of it is justified. But it's Jeff Burton who keeps putting together the kind of season that makes you wonder if this is the year that he winds up being the one holding the Sprint Cup at Homestead.

In many ways, Sunday's Samsung 500 was a typical spring trip to Texas for Burton: Qualify in the bottom half of the field and patiently work your way into the top 10.

Jeff Burton is a political junkie, a basketball fan, a safety advocate and a racecar driver

FORT WORTH, Texas

What do you see when you look at Jeff Burton? A driver? The man leading the NASCAR Sprint Cup points? The defending winner at Texas Motor Speedway?

If that's it, you're missing who Burton is. Peel the layers and you see a person considering a career in politics, an unabashed Duke basketball fan and someone with a desire to leave an impression as he has with safety and rebuilding Richard Childress Racing.

When Burton talks, NASCAR pays attention

Posted on Sunday, April 6, 2008

FORT WORTH — Among successful NASCAR drivers, there are several who can make an impact in corporate America or on Madison Avenue and are well known in and out of the sport.

Then there is Jeff Burton.

FORT WORTH, Texas -- So much was being made of what the pending loss of sponsor General Mills meant to Petty Enterprises on Friday that the other end of the equation almost went overlooked.

As in Petty Enterprises' loss should be Richard Childress Racing's gain.

General Mills announced on Wednesday that it would be shifting its considerable Sprint Cup sponsorship dollars from Petty Enterprises, where it has been the primary sponsor on the No. 43 Dodge since 2000, to a new No. 33 Chevrolet team for RCR beginning in 2009 (complete story). It will be a fourth Cup team for RCR, which also fields the No. 31 car driven by Jeff Burton, the No. 29 driven by Kevin Harvick and the No. 07 driven by Clint Bowyer.

Texas: Burton - Friday media visit
Racing series       NASCAR-CUP
Date     2008-04-04

JEFF BURTON, DRIVER OF THE NO. 31 PRILOSEC OTC IMPALA SS, met with media members at Texas Motor Speedway and talked about what to expect in Sunday's race, his conversation with Michael McDowell, RCR's announcement this past week, the RCR operation, and more.

ON THIS WEEKEND'S RACE: "Well I think it's going to be a really interesting race. Yesterday in the Nationwide car I thought the cars made much less grip than what we're used to seeing here so I think that will certainly be the case with the cup cars too. Good handling car is going to be really important. It's going to make the difference between winning and finishing 20th, I can tell you that. Big challenge ahead of us this weekend, I think and I'm looking forward to it. If you go back and watch the races from Vegas and California and even Atlanta with the issues we had there, I thought the races were really interesting and I think you will see the same kind of race this weekend."
