Burton leads pack back to Texas
By JOHN STURBIN
Star-Telegram Staff Writer
Jeff Burton's current drive to the top of NASCAR's Sprint Cup Series points standings is tinged by a bit of nostalgia involving Texas Motor Speedway.
Burton's third-place finish at Martinsville Speedway on Sunday pushed him into the points lead for the first time this season. Burton scored his first victory of 2008, and the 20th of his career, in his previous outing at Bristol Motor Speedway. The results of those two short-track events have given Burton a 39-point lead over Richard Childress Racing teammate Kevin Harvick heading into the Samsung 500 weekend in Fort Worth. Read More...

Burton new points leader, but by no means satisfied

MARTINSVILLE, Va. -- There is a new leader in the Sprint Cup Series clubhouse.
And although there are many rounds left to play, Jeff Burton is happy to be there for the moment. Burton, driver of the No. 31 Chevrolet for Richard Childress Racing, moved atop the point standings Sunday after finishing a strong third in the Goody's Cool Orange 500 at Martinsville Speedway.
Burton advanced three spots and is 39 points ahead of Kevin Harvick, his Richard Childress Racing teammate who moved up one spot into second in the standings. Burton has 915 points to Harvick's 876, a slim advantage that he knows all too well could disappear quickly if he doesn't take care of business in this weekend's next race at Texas Motor Speedway.

By Sporting News Wire Service
March 30, 2008

MARTINSVILLE, Va. -- Jeff Burton ran third in Sunday's Goody's Cool Orange 500 at Martinsville Speedway, led 37 laps in the process and took over the Sprint Cup points lead.
Positive thoughts, however, weren't on Burton's mind when he climbed from his No. 31 Chevrolet. His attention turned immediately to Michael McDowell, who finished 26th in his Cup debut but, in Burton's view, might have cost the series frontrunner a chance to overtake Denny Hamlin for the victory.
